Kylian Mbappe

Although 2022 is a long time away (and many players are likely to sign new deals before then) it’s always worth a look at which players will be available on a free transfer over a year away. Clubs with top players on this list will be sweating as they look to secure the futures of their players rather than losing them for nothing.

Paris Saint Germain will be the most nervous club in Europe as the summer of 2022 nears. Both Neymar Jr and Kylian Mbappe’s contracts will expire and both are two of the best players on the planet.

Real Madrid have openly been interested in Kylian Mbappe and the fans have been calling for the signing of the wonderkid for many years now. Neymar Jr is close to renewing his contract at PSG and French source L’Equipe have said that he’ll pen a deal until 2026.

FC Barcelona have Ansu Fati, Ousmane Dembele and Pedri all out of contract in the summer of 2022 and will not lack suitors. Fati and Pedri are both youngsters and could look to run down their contracts if they believe they’ll get more playing time elsewhere. Frenchman Dembele has had an uninspiring time at Barcelona and could also look to move on with Liverpool and PSG showing an interest in the past.

Juventus also have a high profile duo with contracts expiring in 2022. Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala could both leave the club and would take a huge amount of wages off the wage bill at the Italian club.

Ronaldo will be 37 and could be lacking suitors unless a move to the MLS or China is on the cards. Dybala has attracted interest from Manchester United, Tottenham and PSG in the past and all of which would sign the Argentine on a free transfer.

Former record-breaking signing Paul Pogba could be a free agent in 2022 if he doesn’t renew his deal at Manchester United. His agent Mino Raiola has stated on numerous occasions that his client is unhappy at the club and could look to move. A return to Juventus could be on the cards as could the potential lure back to France in PSG.

Leon Goretzka and Niklas Süle of Bayern Munich could both leave the club as their contracts end in 2022. Süle has been converted into a right back recently which isn’t his preferred position and could make him think twice about signing a new deal.

Chelsea have shown their interest in Süle in the past and Manchester United have been interested in Goretzka. The lure of the Premier League may be enough to tempt the duo to leave.

Real Madrid’s defensive duo Raphaël Varane and Daniel Carvajal have contracts ending in 2022 and could follow captain Sergio Ramos if he decides to leave in 2021. Manchester United and PSG have both expressed interest in Varane whereas Carvajal hasn’t been linked to many clubs and could sign a new contract at Madrid.
