Thomas Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel took over from Frank Lampard back in January 2021 and was unable to bring anyone in that would suit his playing style. Just like he did in his time at Paris Saint Germain, Tuchel will want to mould a squad so he can implement his game plan.

One position that Tuchel and Chelsea will want to strengthen in the summer transfer window is goalkeeper. Edouard Mendy was brought in from Rennes for £21.6 million last summer, however, has failed to live up to his price tag.

A name that has been on Chelsea’s radar for a few seasons now is AC Milan number one Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italian goalkeeper is out of contract this summer and Chelsea will be ready to pounce. They’ll have to fend off interest from PSG if they want to land their man, however, guarantees of a starting position could be enough to tempt Donnarumma to London.

Another summer signing who hasn’t lived up to expectations so far is German striker Timo Werner. He cost the club £47.7 million and has only scored 5 goals in his first 25 Premier League appearances.

Chelsea have reportedly made Norwegian wonderkid Erling Haaland their number one transfer target in the summer in order to replace Werner. Club owner Roman Abramovich has said the club don’t carehow much Haaland costs, just sign him at all costs.

You can understand why Chelsea are so desperate to land Haaland with the 20-year-old scoring freely in Europe and domestically for Borussia Dortmund. The club could offload England striker Tammy Abraham to raise funds for their transfer target with West Ham, Leicester, Southampton, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Aston Villa all watching the situation closely.

Despite the club’s ambition to throw money at Dortmund, they’ll have to compete with almost every other club in Europe if they are to get Haaland’s signature.

Like Donnarumma, David Alaba is another free agent that Chelsea have been keeping an eye on. Alaba announced that he was leaving Bayern Munich on social media recently and since then, rumours have swirled.

David Alaba wishes to play in midfield which has no longer made Real Madrid favourites for his signature despite being in the lead for the Austrian’s signature for so long. Tuchel could potentially play Alaba in midfield, however, it’s difficult to see where he’d fit in with the likes of N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho already in the squad.

Paris Saint Germain don’t have the depth in midfield Chelsea do and have reportedly jumped at the chance to sign Alaba and offer him the chance to play in his favoured position. Despite this, Chelsea are still in the running and are likely to make a formal offer in the coming months.

French centre backs Raphaël Varane and Ibrahima Konaté have both been linked away from their respective clubs recently with Chelsea ready to jump. The club want to sign a defender this summer in order to tighten up the defence with Varane and Konaté both top quality options.
